How to Treat People with Dignity and Respect

The truth is people will follow you everywhere when they respect you.

It is easy to work with someone that you respect. You will no doubt achieve outstanding results. Conversely, it’s when you don’t feel valued and appreciated that your performance will suffer. Sense-sational leaders consistently treat their teams with dignity and respect. They understand that when people are treated poorly they become resentful and disengaged. The most important aspects to understand about delivering dignity and respect are that it occurs over time and it must be authentic. If you find that you are having difficulties giving or earning respect then you need to sit down with the person/team and find out why. Once you have identified the reason, work towards resolving the problem. Then you can move forward with a relationship that will foster respect and growth to achieve your goals.

Here’s a great exercise to assess the current state in your organization:

1. Have a meeting with your team and ask for open and honest feedback on how they feel they are being treated. Take notes during the meeting.

2. If you know that having a meeting with the entire team will not give you the information that you need, then meet with them individually during one-with-ones and find out how they feel they are treated by you.

3. Once you have talked with your team, review the notes and adjust your behavior accordingly, if needed.

The purpose of the exercise is to receive feedback on your culture’s climate and make any necessary corrections. Your objective is to foster an environment where all team members feel that they are treated with dignity and respect; because people that feel valued add value.
